A Promise to Peru, Inc. is saddened to announce the untimely passing of our Co-Founder and Vice President, John Shanley, M.D., M.P.H. on February 22, 2016.  The members of the board of directors and all of the mission participants who have had the pleasure of knowing and working with Dr. John Shanley express their deepest sympathies and condolences to his wife, Linda and his family. Our non-profit organization owes its formation to Dr. Shanley, as he was the first of our group to visit Peru. He and several medical students from Stony Brook Medical School in New York joined Case Western Reserve University Medical School and the Cleveland Clinic ‘s mission in 2010.  The subsequent year he invited a group of physicians to join him and his medical students for their own medical mission.  George Coritsidis, M.D., Debra Messina, M.D. and Natalie DiGioia, M.D. were among those physicians that had the opportunity to work alongside Dr. Shanley in 2011 and share his passion for providing care to a medically underserved population. John Shanley, M.D., Debra Messina, M.D. and Natalie DiGioia, M.D. subsequently established A Promise to Peru, Inc. in 2012 and it is now a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization.  These three physicians are on the Board of Directors along with George Coritsidis, M.D., Michael Sable, M.D. and Catherine Roberts.   The group has completed their sixth medical mission and their fourth year of providing cataract surgery to the severely visually impaired. Since the non-profit’s inception, the surgical and medial team has accomplished:

• 7,400 medical exams on patients in remote villages, orphanages and schools
• 190 Portable ultrasonography examinations
• 2,900 patients examined in the eye clinic
• Approximately 330 sight restoring surgical procedures performed
• 5,100 pairs of glasses administered

Our organization has established a collaborative effort with healthcare professionals and physicians in Peru & Ecuador, as well as non-profit organizations such as Friends North East International & Michael Cipoletti, Foundacion Niños del Arco Iris, Surgical Eye Expeditions, Peruvian American Medical Society, Asociación Wiñaypaq and Blanca’s House. Together we are working to improve the lives of indigent people in South America and other regions in need.  Furthermore, through screening patients for advanced cataracts and providing cataract surgery free of charge, the project continues to build and advance towards sustainable care.

Our next mission is planned for the week of June 12th, 2016 to the Sacred Valley, Peru.  A Promise to Peru, Inc. will be dedicating this mission to the memory of John Shanley, M.D. A Promise to Peru, Inc. will continue to reach out to those in need and provide care to medically underserve populations and in doing so, Dr. Shanley’s passion, his life’s work and his memory will live on….
